Pilates techniques that were developed by Joseph Pilates throughout his childhood and used to great effect by him when he was a nurse during World War I, have now grown in popularity throughout the 21st century to benefit not just the infirm, but to sculpt and shape the bodies of the most prestigious Hollywood A-listers!

Joseph was a rather frail child who, in addition to asthma, also had a number of other childhood conditions. To gain strength, he took up several different sports achieving a high degree of accomplishment as an athlete.

Taking this knowledge, he designed exercise methods and equipment for immobilized patients and soldiers during his time as a nurse in Great Britain.  Pilates techniques have developed over the years to a series of mat exercises that focus on the core muscles of the torso, based upon various exercise methods such as yoga and Chinese martial arts.

Pilates techniques build flexibility, strength, endurance and co-ordination without adding muscle bulk, which endear the exercises to ballet dancers and gymnasts. It also has the added benefit of increasing circulation, creating better posture and making you less prone to injury and helping you to experience better overall health.
