Diet sodas are marketed towards people who want to lose weight and use less amount of sugar to stay fit as diet sodas are sugar-free, artificially sweetened carbonate drinks.

Various artificial sweeteners and even sugar with other artificial sweeteners are used to give sweet taste to diet soda. The taste of these drinks have mixed opinion. The Genral Opinion is that Sugar drink is the best in terms of taste. Many people say that diet drinks leaves a taste after use. Others feel that diet soda has no aftertaste and that drinks sweetened by high fructose corn syrup an over-sweet aftertaste.

The first artificial sweeteners that came in use were cyclamates. Many had the opinion that these sodas had a better taste than diet sodasthat followed. Around 1970 in US the FDA restricted the use of cyclamates. They resulted into cancer in lab animals. Though the information is known but cyclamates are still used in some countries all over the world, especially in diet soda.

Then American manufacturers began using saccharin. A chemical was founded in saccharin aftertaste by the consumers. Coca-Cola produced Tab by suppling a little amount of sugar. Though a ban was put on saccharin as a carcinogen in 1977 by FDA but this ban was removed as the experiments were over. This was lifted in 1991, but nearly every diet soda had shifted to using aspartame which is now the most common sweetener.

Two new sweeteners are on the market Splenda and Sunett or Ace K both are used with small amounts of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners instead of using alone. These have come into use by some smaller liquor manufacturers.Recently consumers have started believing that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome type illnesses is caused due to aspartame.

Most of the users say that taste of the drinks with these sweeteners are alike natural sugar.  Critics complained the taste is not better and advise that the long-term risks of using artificial sweeteners are not yet known.

Effectiveness of diet sodas as a weight loss tool has also come under a cloud with health concerns of sugar substitutes and overuse of caffeine.

Switching to diet soda may cause weight loss to the people who take regular soda in large amount.Animal studies prove that artificial sweeteners results in weight gain. The sweetness causes an insulin response, resulting blood sugar to store in tissues but because blood sugar does not increase with artificial sugars, hypoglycemia can occur and people intake more at the next meal. Caloric intake increased causing increment in fat and body weight when sweeteners were given to rats.

So, the jury on how helpful diet soda is to losing weight is still out.
